Floating Stepping Stones or a ‘Floating Bridge of Stone’
A feature you might add is stepping stones that seemingly float on the surface of the pond. Your path can go across the entire pond or just cut across a small section of one of the corners.
If your ‘floating bridge’ is just across the corner of your pond then all you need to do is leave a small ridge of earth when you dig the pond that will allow you to to place stones on top after installing the liner. This will leave a section of pond between the stepping stones and the side of the pond. You may make this area shallow to accommodate marginal plants or you can fill it with colored pebbles or just let the water flow freely to the edge of the pond.
If you want a ‘floating bridge’ across the pond then I recommend constructing a rectangular box of 2×6 pressure treated wood. Two pieces of 2×6 that will span the width of the pond with 1 foot spacers that you can anchor into the sides of the pond. Place it 4-6 inches below he intended water surface. Place your stepping stones on the wood frame and they will appear to float on the surface.
Decide before hand which rocks you will be using for this ‘bridge’ across the water. Heavy 6 inch thick stones work well. Space the rocks naturally to form your ‘bridge’. If you plan to use the bridge you might consider using 2×8′s to construct your bridge supports. Constructing the bridge this way allows for water flow below the surface and it will also allow aquatic life to pass under the bridge as well as over it. You may completely disguise the wood by placing thinner stones on the wood structure between the stepping stones which will still allow for water flow, but will be under the surface. Any questions?
