Malus ‘Donald Wyman’ Close-up

We acquired this gorgeous flowering crabapple when we bought our house four years ago. I pruned it heavily in early April of that first year. We purchased our house in March of 2006. The tree was out of control with branches going in all directions and some low branches and suckers that were not adding to the potential beauty and shape of the tree. I took off 2 or 3 low branches, several suckers growing from the base of the tree and then every small branch that pointed north or south. I cleared the inside of the tree near the trunk of any suckers and gave the remaining branches some breathing room. The tree responded with an abundance of showy flowers, full and strong. A couple notes on the “Malus ‘Donald Wyman’ hybrid flowering crabapple. It has bright reddish-pink buds that are very showy. They open to a white 5 petal formation. The petals have a cupped appearance that differentiates it from a couple other white flowering crabs that have flatter petals. This tree gets fairly large. Up to 20-25 wide x 20-25 feet high. My tree is about 18′ x 15′ now. The birds love this tree for its fruit and they will strip it clean by springtime. It attracts butterflies and loads of bees after it blooms.
