Background: I worked as a landscaper, designer and restorer of old homes for 20+ years in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. I learned from the roots up. I’ve also owned a restaurant, woodworking business and to this day I still design websites.

My schooling was and is every book I can put my hands on, every home & garden show I am able to attend, landscape TV shows and every question I could ask of university extension departments and garden centers. In addition working with and learning from fellow landscapers, builders, carpenters, and the best teacher of all – first-hand experience and of course “This Old House” continues to build an in-depth knowledge of landscaping.

Not everything you’ll ever do in a landscape works. It doesn’t matter what you know or who is installing it, sometimes you fail. The micro-climate might not be exactly right, the layout might be too fussy, or you just might change your mind. I did not fail often, but when I did I learned from those experiences and created positive results that were applied to every new job.

The last installation I did before I retired from landscaping was my own mountainside home in New Hampshire. It took the better part of 3 landscaping seasons from start to somewhat finished; working around and in between client jobs. Even after 2 years of planning and 3 years of construction the project was not complete — nor did I expect it to be. The rudiments of the long term plan were in place, but the final touches continue to be part of the creative process that never ends. That’s the nature of landscaping. It is a work in progress.
